Mahjong Charleston Assistant
Enter the tiles on your rack and get three to pass, with a plain-English reason for each.
Bams
Craks
Dots
Winds and dragons
Flowers and Jokers
A rule of thumb based on how your tiles group, not the best possible pass. The best pass depends on the hand you are building, and this tool does not use or include the NMJL card. Unofficial fan tool, not affiliated with the National Mah Jongg League.
What the assistant looks at
The Charleston is three-tile passing before play begins: right, across, then left for the first Charleston, with an optional second Charleston in reverse and an optional courtesy pass across the table. Jokers are never passed. The assistant scores every tile on your rack and passes the three it values least.
| What it sees | What it does |
|---|---|
| Jokers | Leaves them out. They can never be passed. |
| Pairs and sets of three or four | Keeps them together. It passes single tiles first. |
| Single winds and dragons | Passes them early. Nothing on your rack matches them. |
| A single flower | Passes it, unless you are collecting flowers. |
| Suit tiles | Keeps tiles that sit near each other in the same suit, or share a number with another suit, and leans toward your strongest suit. |
| Too few single tiles | Passes an extra copy from a set first, then the pair that connects least. |

Is this the best pass?
No. It is a rule of thumb. The best pass depends on the hand you are building, and that depends on your card. This tool does not read or use the NMJL card, so it works only from how your tiles group. Treat it as a sensible starting point.
Why does the assistant never suggest a Joker?
Jokers can never be passed in the Charleston, not even in the courtesy pass. Any Jokers on your rack stay with you, so the assistant leaves them out.
How many tiles do I pass, and in which direction?
You pass three tiles at a time. The first Charleston is required: right, then across, then left. A second Charleston, left, across, right, happens only if every player agrees. After that there is an optional courtesy pass with the player across, where you exchange zero to three tiles by agreement.
Should I enter 13 or 14 tiles?
East, the dealer, starts with 14 tiles and everyone else with 13. Choose your rack size at the top and add the tiles you hold. You can use the assistant before any pass, entering whatever is on your rack at that moment.
How does the assistant choose?
It keeps pairs and sets together, keeps tiles that connect to each other in the same suit or by matching numbers, and passes lonely tiles first. Single winds and dragons and single flowers go before suit tiles with company. The table above the FAQ lists every rule.
What do the suit names mean?
Bams are bamboo, Craks are characters and Dots are circles. If you are unsure which tile is which, practice with the Tile Trainer.
Is anything saved or sent?
No. Your rack stays in your browser and nothing is stored or sent to us. Refresh the page and it starts again.
Can I use this during a game?
Check your table’s rules first. Many in-person tables do not allow phones during play, and online platforms often do not allow outside tools. It works best for practice and for reviewing a game afterwards.
