    Worked examples

A jokerless hand doubles the value first, except singles and pairs hands, which never get that bonus. A win by Joker exchange counts as a self-pick under standard scoring. See our scoring guide and rules guide for more, and use the Joker Rule Checker if a play is in doubt.

    Payout questions

Who pays double in American Mahjong?

If the winner takes a discard, the player who discarded the winning tile pays double and the other two pay the hand’s value. If the winner picks the tile from the wall, all three other players pay double.

    What is the jokerless bonus?

A winning hand with no Jokers in it doubles the value. This bonus does not apply to singles and pairs hands, because Jokers are never allowed in them.

Do singles and pairs hands get the self-pick bonus?

Yes. Self-pick still doubles what each player pays. Only the jokerless bonus is skipped for those hands.

Does winning with a Joker exchange count as a self-pick?

Under standard scoring it does, so everyone pays double. Use the self-picked option in the calculator for that case, and confirm with your table.

How much does a 25-point hand pay?

At 1 point = 1 cent, a 25-point hand won on a discard pays 50 cents from the discarder and 25 cents from each of the others, so the winner collects $1.00. Self-picked, each of the three players pays 50 cents, a total of $1.50.

Can the discarder pay for the whole table?

Some groups play that way, for example when the winner has several exposures. It is a house rule, so the calculator has it as an option. The winner collects the same total either way.

How do I turn points into dollars?

A common convention is 1 point = 1 cent, so a 25-point hand is 25 cents. Stakes vary, so choose points if your table uses a different value and convert at your own rate.

Does this calculator handle money or bets?

No. It only does the arithmetic your table has already agreed on. No wagers are accepted and no money is moved.
