Mahjong Daily Challenge
A new Charleston puzzle every day. Pick three tiles to pass and see how your choice compares with the assistant’s.
Jokers can never be passed, so they cannot be selected.
The assistant’s pass is a rule of thumb based on how your tiles group, not the best possible pass. It does not use or include the NMJL card. Your streak and answer are saved in this browser only. Unofficial fan tool, not affiliated with the National Mah Jongg League.
How the score works
Every day has one hand of 13 tiles. In the Charleston you pass three tiles you do not want, and Jokers can never be passed. Choose your three, lock them in, and each tile is compared with what the Charleston Assistant would pass from the same rack.
| Your tile | Points |
|---|---|
| The assistant passes it too | 2 |
| A close call: a single tile with few connections | 1 |
| The assistant would keep it | 0 |
Six points makes 100. After you answer, you see why the assistant chose what it did, tile by tile. For more on the thinking, read our advice on what to pass and our Charleston guide.

Daily challenge questions
How is my score worked out?
Each of your three tiles is compared with the three tiles the Charleston Assistant would pass. A tile the assistant also passes earns 2 points, a close call earns 1, and a tile the assistant would keep earns 0. Six points is a score of 100, five is 83, four is 67, three is 50, two is 33, one is 17, and none is 0.
Is the assistant’s pass the right answer?
No. It is a rule of thumb based on how your tiles group, and it does not use the NMJL card. Good players often pass differently depending on the hand they are building. The score tells you how close you were to the assistant, not how well you played.
When does a new challenge appear?
At midnight in your own time zone. Everyone sees the same hand on the same date.
Do the hands repeat?
The list covers a full year of hands, so each date has its own hand and the same hand comes back on the same date a year later. Roughly one hand in six is built to teach one idea, such as a rack full of pairs or a lot of lonely winds.
Why can’t I choose a Joker?
Jokers can never be passed in the Charleston, so they cannot be selected.
Is my streak saved?
Yes, in your own browser on this device. Nothing is sent to us. Clearing your browser data resets it, and a day you miss ends the streak.
Can I replay a challenge or see past ones?
Not in the free version: each day’s hand can be played once. An archive of past challenges and your score history are planned for Mahjong Rules Tools Pro.
Can I try my own hand?
Yes. The Charleston Assistant lets you enter any rack and shows what it would pass, with a reason for each tile.
