How the rotation works

A mahjong table seats four. When more people turn up, someone has to sit out, and when you have eight, you can run two tables. The scheduler makes that fair. It rotates who sits out so the breaks are shared evenly, and it mixes the tables and seats so players meet different opponents and do not sit in the same place all night.

Scheduler questions

How does the scheduler decide who sits out?

Each round, the players who have sat out the fewest times sit out next. If that is a tie, the player who has waited longest since their last break sits out. Any remaining ties are broken at random.

Is the rotation fair?

Yes. Over any number of rounds, no player plays more than one round more than anyone else. With a full rotation (as many rounds as there are players) everyone sits out the same number of times.

How are eight players split between two tables?

Each round, the scheduler tries every way of splitting the group into two tables of four and picks the split that repeats the fewest pairings, so people meet as many different opponents as possible.

What are the seats for?

Seats are listed in East, South, West, North order. The scheduler spreads the seats around so nobody sits in the same place all night. You can switch the seat labels off if your table rolls dice for seats.

How many rounds should I choose?

Choose the number of games you plan to play. A full rotation is as many rounds as there are players for 5, 6 or 7 players. For 8 players, 7 rounds is a good length.

Does American Mahjong use partners?

No, American Mahjong is played as individuals, so the scheduler simply mixes the tables so everyone plays with different people.

Can I plan for more than eight players, several tables or a whole season?

Not yet. Multi-week schedules and multiple tables are planned for Mahjong Rules Tools Pro. Join the waitlist on the tools page to hear when they open.

Is anything saved or sent?
