Tile questions

What tiles are in an American Mahjong set?

There are 152 tiles: 108 suit tiles (Bams, Craks and Dots, four of each number from 1 to 9), 16 winds, 12 dragons, 8 flowers and 8 Jokers.

What are Bams, Craks and Dots?

They are the three suits. Bams are bamboo sticks, Craks are the character suit with Chinese numerals, and Dots are circles.

Why does the 1 Bam look like a bird?

The 1 Bam usually shows a bird instead of a single stick. It is a traditional design, and it is easy to mistake for a flower or a Joker at first.

What is the White dragon, or Soap?

The White dragon is the blank or plain-framed tile, and many players call it Soap. There are four of them, like the other dragons.

Are all the flowers the same?

Flowers come in different designs, but they are interchangeable in hands. The trainer treats them as one tile, with eight copies.

How do Jokers work?

Jokers are wild in groups of three or more identical tiles. They can never be used in a pair or as a single tile. Our Joker Rule Checker covers the details.

Will my tiles look exactly like these?

Probably not. Artwork and colors vary between sets. The trainer shows a typical layout, so learn the pattern as well as the picture.

How does a round work?

A quiz round has up to 10 questions. You can name the tile you see, or find the tile you are asked for. The flashcards let you flip through the tiles at your own pace.
